The verb is פָּלָא (H6381), which occurs seventy-one times in the Hebrew Bible and almost everywhere means to be extraordinary or beyond reach — the word behind the wonders of the exodus. The source glosses it make hard at exactly two sites, both of them vows: Leviticus 27:2 and this verse. That count was verified across all four volumes. What the idiom describes is a vow that is set apart from ordinary speech, difficult in the sense of binding.

Three things in this verse are worth seeing on the page. The subject is a man or a woman, and the vow is open to both. The verbs that follow are masculine singular throughout the chapter, so the English cannot keep the opening's inclusiveness without inventing agreement the Hebrew does not have; the reading line follows the Hebrew and lets the seam show. And the noun נָזִיר is left untransliterated as Nazirite rather than rendered consecrated one, because the word names a status the language has no ordinary term for.
